History of Ama Dablam – Nepal
In 1961, eight years after Everest’s conquest, Edmund Hillary was the instigator of the first ascent of Ama Dablam – Nepal, whose name means “reliquary of the mother”. It was reached for the first time by an international roped party made up of the American Barry Bishop, the Englishman Michael Ward, and the two New Zealanders, Wally Romanes and Michael Kennedy, by its south-eastern ridge. And it was in 1979 that a French expedition undertook the first ascent of the north ridge. Ama Dablam is one of the four most beautiful mountains on the planet. This pyramid of rock and ice is a very lovely objective for experienced mountaineers with, as a reward at the top, a fantastic view of the giants over 8000m that surround it, including Everest!
